WEBINAR: Impacts Of COVID-19 On Minnesota’s Food And Ag Supply Chain

Date: December 16, 2020

Time: 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Location: Virtual

The COVID-19 virus impacted nearly every aspect of American life and business. Minnesota’s food and agricultural supply chain has not been spared from the effects of the pandemic. These businesses faced unprecedented challenges and continue to make difficult decisions to ensure financial viability.

Given the essential nature of food and agriculture, a coalition of Minnesota food and agriculture groups partnered to survey related processors and manufacturers in July 2020 to better understand the supply chain effects of COVID-19, as well as the identifying resultant pain points and what new services, resources and collective solutions may help overcome them.

Over 100 respondents provided insight into supply chain disruptions and responses, including market and sales losses, labor shortages, bottlenecks, etc. While the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted Minnesota food and agriculture manufacturers and processors business, the disruptions did not break them. Rather, the pandemic exposed gaps that need to be addressed to make supply chains more agile and resilient in navigating future disruptions.

The study was conducted through a partnership of the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute, AgriGrowth, the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, GreenSeam and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

Join the webinar to hear the survey results and a panel discussion on insights and potential actions resulting from the effort, followed by an audience question/answer session.

China Town Hall (GreenSeam Co-Hosting)

Date: November 18, 2019

Time: 5:00 - 7:30 pm

Location: MSU Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at 424 N. Riverfront Dr. Mankato, MN 56001

Minnesota State University, Mankato's College of Business and GreenSeam is partnering with the National Committee on U.S. China Relations to host the event at the MSU Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The event includes two components:

The first hour will involve a live-streamed video of George Stephanopoulos moderating a discussion with foreign policy experts on U.S./China relations.

For the second hour, we will have a panel of three local leaders discussing the impact of U.S./China relations and global trends on our local businesses and community. We have invited three local/state leaders in the agriculture, food production and manufacturing sectors discuss the local angle.

The China Town Hall event is aimed at the MSU student body and our local community. GreenSeam feels it is vitally important for the students to understand and recognize how globally-connected agriculture and food is. Last year, David Fredrickson, Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner spoke about the impact of the trade war on Minnesota’s farmers and food producers, efforts to identify new markets, and the relationship between our local agriculture and the global community. It is vital for our students to hear stories from local leaders to talk about our local position in the global market.

More than three-dozen years ago, the Rural Forum was started by the Minnesota AgriWomen’s Association and the University of Minnesota Extension. Since its inception, it has changed hands but one thing that has not changed is the overarching goal to gather the community in important conversations about our rural economy and about agriculture. A crucial element is to have those discussions with key elected officials, along with industry speakers that can really help pull the picture together. This year, GreenSeam will host the 37th annual Rural Legislative Forum on December 5th.
